Medical & Oncology Massage Associates
Modalities Provided

Oncology massage can be safe and therapeutic during and after cancer treatment.  Oncology massage is customized to meet the unique and changing needs of someone in treatment for cancer or with a history of cancer.  A safe massage for cancer patients revolves around the side effects (both long- and short-term) of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Oncology massage should be provided by a massage therapist who has received training in the specifics of cancer and cancer treatment.

An oncology massage therapist is trained to adapt for:

  • Low blood cell counts and blood clots
  • Bone metastases
  • Radiation and surgery
  • Fatigue
  • Bone pain
  • Removal of lymph nodes and lymphedema
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Medications
  • Medical devices such as ports
  • Late effects of treatment
My training includes 300 hours of oncology training from the Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage in Santa Fe, NM.  I am one of 60 therapists in the United States to receive this extensive training.  This certification has qualified me to treat cancer patients at any point in their illness.  I have had training to treat patients in the hospital safely and using protocols required of the nursing staff to insure the safety and comfort of the patient.  I am certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage.  The Eastern Oncology Massage protocol is like acupuncture without needles.  I use the same points an acupuncturist would use only I use special oils and hot stones to stimulate the points.

The session is planned around the patient’s needs of that day and can be helpful in improving the following conditions:

  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Constipation, nausea, diarrhea, and other side effects of chemotherapy
  • Fatigue
  • Low white and/or red blood cell counts
  • Anxiety
